I can’t believe that next month it will already be one year since we opened the new studio.
How far we have come. How many connections, stories and experiences we have shared together.
People I haven’t seen since the old studio have walked into the space and said, “Wow, look at what you have created.”
I could never have opened this door without all the people who came to support the studio and share themselves: their vulnerability, their hearts, their insecurities, their challenges and their openings.
I am truly grateful.
I have also learned so much as a teacher through each one of you.
Last year, after wanting to attend for so many years, I finally made it to EURIX in Berlin. I was deeply touched by Felix Ruckert’s opening speech.
He spoke about the intention we bring into a space, the energy we create together during EURIX, and the power dynamics present in the wider world. He asked how we might deconstruct those dynamics within our practice of rope.
I loved the intensity, the depth and the radical presence of that question.
As I move into the studio’s second year, my intention is to explore all the ways human beings can relate through rope, and all the art forms that each element of Shibari can suggest.
The movement.
The rhythm.
The shape.
The unknown forms.
The empty and the full.
The raw and the rough.
The tender.
The slow and the fast.
The unexpected and the unexplored.
I have just bought a new camera, lens and lights for the studio, and I am excited to explore more photography, film, movement and visual storytelling through rope.
I look forward to this next year with all of you: those already known, and those still unknown who will come through the door to share, connect and create with us.
